4/27/10: Statement on Support for a Property Tax Cap
"Unshackle Upstate recognizes Governor Paterson's call for a real property tax cap, and calls on him to work with members of the Legislature, in particular Senate Republicans, to provide the people of New York with a real, sustainable property tax cap of 2.5 percent
Our coalition has been calling for a property tax cap as one way to curb the unsustainable burden that property taxes put on the homeowners and employers of this state. New York is home to the 10 highest-taxed counties in the country as a percentage of home value.
On Monday, the Senate Republicans advanced legislation to establish a 2.5 percent property tax cap. The measure could have resulted in a property tax structure similar to Massachusetts which, over a period of time, moved the commonwealth from being the third highest taxed state to the 33rd. Unfortunately, New York's version of this measure was blocked by the Senate Democratic Majority.
The Unshackle Army continues to watch our elected leaders in expectation that they heed the overwhelming call for change. Those who do not support change will face the voters and employers of New York on Nov. 2 - Judgment Day."
