Statement attributable to Greg Biryla, Unshackle Upstate executive director
"Five years ago, Unshackle Upstate fought back against a proposal to raise Thruway tolls by a staggering 45 percent. Today, Governor Cuomo has indicated that tolls will rise after 2020 in order to subsidize the cost of the Tappan Zee Bridge.
It's unfair to ask Upstate commuters to pay for a bridge that many will never use. We strongly encourage Governor Cuomo and members of the Thruway Authority board to explore other ways to pay for this downstate project. Conducting a thorough, independent forensic audit of the Thruway Authority's operations and finances, which we proposed five years ago, would be a good first step."
